IVF #2: Starting Meds

I wrote all of these posts on the dates listed before each entry, but we weren't ready to post them until now.  If you know the outcome of our IVF, please don't give it away in the comments until after the "IVF #7: Results are In!" post has been posted.

In case you missed it, here is a link to the first post, "IVF #1: The Beginning".

Today our IVF meds arrived in the mail!! It made everything feel so real...and overwhelming.  I mean look at all that stuff.  I don't even know where to start and I HATE needles.  But, I love our little babies already and I know that I can do hard things.

Today I started my first shots!  Thankfully I am in Utah, so Matt woke up with me.  I removed the wrapper from the syringe, cleaned the top of the medicine vile with an alcohol swab, drew up the medication, cleaned my belly with an alcohol swab, and then I went to poke myself with that needle.  I thought it might be easier to "get a running start" so I started far away with a lot of force and still stopped short of my belly.  I just couldn't do it.  Even with Matt sitting there beside me.  Finally he grabbed that syringe, held it up and said, "Are you really going to let this stand between you and a baby?!"  Then he poked me in the stomach.  I loved him for that.  The first one is always the worst because you don't know what to expect.  It really wasn't too bad.  I married a good, good man.

This morning I woke up and prepped my shot.  Matt woke up with me again and I had every intention of giving myself that shot, but I just couldn't put that needle in my belly.  So we compromised.  He would poke.  I would inject.  It worked out well.  :)  I know that I only have a couple days left before I go back to Indiana and don't have any other option, but to give these shots to myself.

Today is my last day in Utah for a while, so I decided to let Matt sleep in and I gave myself that darn shot in the dark.  It only took 2 seconds of courage and I was proud of myself.  Especially because for the next week and a half I'll be all on my own in Indiana.  I'll have to wake up every morning and stab myself in the belly with one of those needles!!

You are so cute to do a video. Super impressed that you gave them to yourself! That is quite the pile medication.

Shots are hard at first! I love how after time, they don't phase you though. Just like most scary things at first. It just takes time and then you're a pro! Glad you're posting your story so we can see how it works!

oh my goodness. You are brave. I can't relate to you but I know my sister can! She gave herself shots for IVF. You should've seen her tummy after awhile. Man! You both are awesome! Way to go Steph! Anything for a baby, right?!

You are super woman! I know it's probably not easy sharing your experience in such detail, but I assure you there are people out there who find strength from your journey!
